Tips to keep you safe and spend less when visiting Las Vegas!

Researching Hotels beforehand

Las Vegas, being a world-renowned destination, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The city is brimming with entertainment and attractions for travelers, but before you book your hotel, do some homework and read internet reviews. Scan for safety-related reviews and see which hotel has the greatest customer satisfaction rating. This is a helpful approach for gathering first-hand information from travelers who have previously stayed there. Despite the greatest efforts of Las Vegas hotel security, it is impossible to ensure the entire protection of all guests. When departing, always make sure to thoroughly close and lock your door.

Never give someone your room number. Before entering the door if you aren’t expecting room service, phone the front desk to confirm the knock. While you are away from your room, put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the outside doorknob and leave a light or TV on to give the impression that someone is in there and prevent intruders. In reality, a six-figure heist occurred in one of the hotels on the Las Vegas Strip in July 2021. So, be cautious when selecting a hotel and observe these safety precautions.

High price hotels with no benefits

You might be planning a trip to Las Vegas soon. There’s lots of entertainment and things to do here, including the famous casinos and their games of chance, the amazing shopping at Mandalay Bay, the performing arts at Wynn Las Vegas, or any number of other activities. You might be staying at one of the resorts on The Strip and you might think that all of the hotels there are similarly expensive—but that’s not true.

You don’t have to pay high resort fees at most of the hotels on The Strip. By booking a room at a hotel in downtown Las Vegas, you can save money while still being near everything that makes a trip to Las Vegas so entertaining. Some hotels even have package deals with tickets to shows or attractions, which can make your vacation even more affordable and fun.

Pickpockets in Las Vegas

Being that Vegas is such a tourist hot spot, the pickpockets here are known to be exceptionally skilled. Be aware that you can and will be targeted for crime. For example, if you show off your bling or dress like Prince, you might naturally draw attention as an easy victim.

If you plan on shopping while in sin city, remember to put all of your valuables in your hotel room safe. Even if you don’t purchase anything extravagant, it’s still a good idea to keep it with the front desk out of an abundance of caution. If they were to get into your room, they might grab those items as well.

Be humble when winning

Las Vegas is a city known for gambling and lots of people who take a trip to Las Vegas gamble. If you’re lucky enough to win big, you might feel the urge to go around to all your friends and tell them about your great luck. But this can land you in trouble.

In fact, one man was so eager to share his good fortune, he did it in his neighborhood. He won jackpots twice—and both times, he told everyone around him. The first time he won, he was robbed. The second time, a couple of robbers asked for more money than he had on him and when he refused, they shot him multiple times in the chest and killed him. So if you win big at a casino, cash out calmly and don’t boast about it to other gamblers. Instead, ask for a cashier’s check so you can deposit it in your bank account instead of carrying around large sums of cash that could be stolen from you.

Beware of Scam Artists

In Las Vegas, be wary of con artists. A citizen of Las Vegas was sentenced to prison for an elder fraud scheme as an example of a scam. Sending letters to elders who believe they have won a huge sum of money and may claim it for a cost of $20 to $30. This scheme defrauded victims of more than $9 million.

Unlicensed street vendors selling counterfeit or expensive things are another example, and food vendors may sell items that are unhealthy to eat. Or vendors sponsoring shell games or illegitimate games in which a paid actor wins, attracting newbies who are unaware they have little chance of winning. Or scams in which you invest in a money-making opportunity. Attend one of the many art and craft fairs in the neighborhood or browse the city’s unique antique stores to support small businesses. So, if you’re visiting Las Vegas, don’t fall for these types of frauds.

Don’t leave valuables in your car

One example is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, where a number of car break-ins have happened. Car break-ins occur when someone breaks a window or otherwise gains entry to a car with the intent of stealing any items within. Wallets, phones, credit cards, laptops, purses, and other items can all be removed in under 30 seconds.

Remove all items and valuables from the vehicle if you are traveling by car. Anything that could attract someone to break in or imply that you’re from out of town falls into this category.

Parking is available in well-lit public lots. If you are uneasy walking to your vehicle at night, request an escort from the hotel personnel, have your keys ready in your pocket, and inspect the interior before getting in. To avoid getting lost in the wrong neighborhoods, plan your route and use a phone app.
